In North America, diapers cost families around 100$ a month, per child. (Institue for research on poverty, 2022). These prices vary based on the distance parents travel to buy diapers, and whether the location closest has cheap or more expensive options.
In an American study that interviewed 70 low-income families in various regions, 70% of those families reported skipping other necessities in order to buy diapers. 33% experienced anxiety or depression due to the stress of living diaper to diaper.
Baby formula typically costs about 65 dollars per week, if baby is exclusively eating formula. Meghan Neufeld, executive-director of a non-profit that provides support to low-income families in Vancouver estimates a month’s supply of high-quality formula could cost more than $600 a month (Sun, 2023)
That does not take into account specialized formulas for allergies or aversions, which are typically harder to locate and more expensive. In Canada, Baby formula prices are rising faster than inflation. A critical problem for families feeding with formula (CBC, 2023) CBC Radio's Cost of Living has previously reported that baby formula prices have typically doubled every 10 to 15 years in Canada (CBC, 2023)
The soaring cost of infant formula is forcing some parents to dilute the nutritional supplement with water or replace it with cow’s milk which is not recommended and can severely impact an infant’s growth, as early nutrition is the key to thrive for children under 1 (Vancouver Sun, 2023).
Health Canada’s website notes supply has started to stabilize this fall, but it is unclear how those changes will affect prices.
